I thought it would be a fun show
We’ve come to expect anything with Stallone to be a comedy these days, and “Tulsa King” has a healthy dose of humor. But Taylor Sheridan isn’t going to make a simple parody of the mob story and use Stallone as a joke and a stunner. The show has promising depth, despite the easy premise of a former mob hero forced to start a new life in a new city after a long prison sentence. When a New York mobster finds his way to Tulsa, where he sets up his own turf with his “old world” ways, the comedy ensues.
Stallone gives a great performance
The characters are genuinely very likable. While it’s not unusual to have a “bad” Stallone as the main character, his candor and old world common sense values appeal to those of us looking for something refreshing amidst the social absurdity of today. The irony of the message is that it takes a ruthless thug to break down and expose superficial social hypocrisy. It’s the same formula that made Yellowstone a success, and Sheridan knows that’s what many of us want.
Overall, a very entertaining series that I’m looking forward to, and a great addition to the Paramount+ portfolio
Before he became a caricature in his later roles that ruined the Rocky and Rambo franchises, his acting and screen presence created these iconic roles. It’s great to see him back on screen in a role that feels perfect to him, and to use that brash personality to give his character and the show depth, not to diminish it.
