Mid-1990s New York. Patty, Angela, Emma and Nikki are high school seniors and best friends preparing for life after graduation. Their dreams for the future differ greatly – Angela wants to be a poet, Emma and Nikki are going to college, and Patty is a young mother looking for stability in her child’s life – but these four smart young women are fiercely loyal to each other in a way that only teenagers can be. Their lives are turned upside down when, after being sexually assaulted, Nikki unexpectedly commits suicide. Sad, angry and forced to return to their everyday lives without a satisfactory way to express their feelings, the girls must grow up with a new understanding of the patriarchal world they live in.
